Welcome to my new series, Curating My Dream Wardrobe: A Journey to Intentional Style. As we transition into spring, it’s the perfect time to refine our style and build a wardrobe that truly reflects who we are. This isn’t about starting from scratch but being more thoughtful and strategic with our fashion choices.
In this series, I’ll walk you through my process of decluttering, assessing what I already own, identifying wardrobe gaps, and making smarter purchases. My goal is to shop with intention, avoid impulse buys, and focus on pieces that will stand the test of time. If you’re on a similar journey, stay tuned—let’s build our dream wardrobes together!
Why I’m Refining My Wardrobe
New York Fashion Week was a turning point for me. As I put together outfits and evaluated my personal style, I realized that I wanted to be more intentional with my purchases. Instead of adding trendy pieces I’ll only wear once or twice, I want to build a versatile wardrobe filled with pieces I genuinely love and will wear repeatedly.
The Dangers of Impulse Shopping
We’ve all been there—spring arrives, and suddenly, we’re drawn to all the cute new arrivals. We pick up a few trendy pieces, but they no longer fit our aesthetic when the next season rolls around. Instead of falling into this cycle, I want to take a big-picture approach to my style.
One example: I used to spend $300 on multiple Zara items that I’d only wear a handful of times. But what if I took that same budget and invested in a statement skirt or high-quality blazer that I could style for multiple seasons? That’s the mindset shift I’m working on.
Step 1: Reflecting on My Style Evolution
Before adding anything new, I’m looking at past outfits and analyzing what worked and what didn’t. Here are some of my key takeaways:
- Avoid overly trendy pieces. While they may be fun in the moment, they often don’t last.
- Stick to colors that suit me – I once forced myself to wear a lime yellow blouse that didn’t complement my skin tone, just because it was trendy.
- Invest in quality accessories. Instead of buying multiple trendy sunglasses, I now prefer timeless styles like my Saint Laurent clear-lens glasses, which I can wear repeatedly.
Step 2: Assessing My Wardrobe
Wardrobe Essentials
A well-curated wardrobe starts with essentials—the foundational pieces around which you can build endless outfits. For me, these include:
- Denim: A great pair of jeans is a must, but I realized I own mainly trendy denim styles that I rarely wear. I need a classic, relaxed-fit blue denim pair with no rips.
- White tees & button-downs: Perfect for layering and styling multiple ways.
- Blazers & outerwear: I have some amazing coats, but I’m missing a structured double-breasted blazer that I can dress up or down.
- Shoes: I need a comfortable, strappy black heel that I can wear day or night.
Step 3: Identifying What’s Missing
After analyzing my wardrobe, I’ve identified a few gaps that I need to fill. I’m making a wish list to ensure I only buy what I truly need:
My Spring Wardrobe Wish List:
✅ Relaxed-fit blue jeans (without rips) ✅ Strappy black heels for day-to-night wear ✅ Double-breasted oversized blazer ✅ High-quality statement skirt ✅ A chic black tote bag (minimal branding, structured style) ✅ Unique but wearable accessories
Instead of impulse buying, I’m carefully considering my wishlist items and taking my time before making any purchases.
Step 4: Strategic Shopping & Smart Investments
When it comes to shopping, I’m embracing quality over quantity. That doesn’t mean everything has to be expensive—it means choosing pieces that have longevity.
My Approach to Smart Shopping:
🔹 Set a budget for key pieces instead of splurging on multiple lower-quality items. 🔹 Look for sales on high-quality brands rather than buying fast fashion in bulk. 🔹 Ensure new purchases integrate seamlessly into my existing wardrobe.
For example, I regret not buying the Maison Margiela Slash Jeans when I was in Paris—they’ve now doubled in price. This taught me to invest in key pieces when I find them at a good price rather than trying to find cheaper alternatives that don’t satisfy the need.
Step 5: Decluttering & Making Space for the New
One of the biggest challenges of curating my dream wardrobe is decluttering. Living in an NYC apartment means space is limited, and I don’t want to keep pieces I never wear.
Decluttering Tips:
✔️ If I haven’t worn it in a year, it’s time to donate or sell it. ✔️ Trendy pieces that don’t align with my long-term style have to go. ✔️ Accessories should be functional and stylish—no more random impulse buys. ✔️ If I’m forcing myself to make an item work, it’s probably not right for me.
I realized that my Marc Jacobs tote no longer fits my style, so I’m planning to sell it. Instead, I’m looking for a structured, minimal black tote that aligns with my aesthetic.
Step 6: Styling & Experimenting with My Wardrobe
The best part of this process? Rediscovering my own wardrobe! Before buying anything new, I’m experimenting with different outfit combinations to see how I can re-style what I already own.
Some of my recent outfit discoveries: 👖 My Acne Studios jeans are a hidden gem—I just needed to find the right tops to pair them with. 👗 My Frankie Shop blazer is perfect for spring layering. 👠 My Zara ripped denim is still a staple, but I want a cleaner-cut version for versatility.
Final Thoughts: Embracing a More Intentional Approach to Style
Curating my dream wardrobe is an ongoing journey, but I already feel more in control of my style choices. I’m focused on quality over quantity, buying with intention, and creating a wardrobe that truly reflects who I am.
